Moving Tips for College

Writer: Rachel NRachel N

In college, you move a lot, whether it's home for the summers or to a new apartment when your lease ends, and it's usually right before school starts. This year, I'm moving into a new unit in the same building because my fourth roommate is leaving, but instead of just letting us move into the new unit, we have to live elsewhere for three weeks. Today is Tuesday, and we move Friday, so lots of work to do! I've moved quite a few times in the last few years, and these tips are what worked for me.

  1. Four Weeks Out

  • Make a list, what is every thing that needs to get done by moving day?

  • Lock in your storage plans if you need storage

  • Go through everything to see what you can donate/throw away

2. Two Week Out

  • Pack everything that you don't need for the next two weeks (seasonal clothes, decorations, etc)

  • Clean out your closets

3. One Week Out

  • Get rid of old food, donate what you can to a food pantry

  • Start packing everything in boxes

  • Make a suitcase of things that absolutely need to stay without you throughout the move.

4. Three Days Out

  • Now that things are out of the way, deep clean everything so you don't get fined

  • Transfer boxes to storage if possible

5. Moving Day!

  • Do a sweep before you leave for forgotten items

  • Enjoy your new place :)
